MARBLEHEAD — There will be a new face on the Marblehead girls volleyball team’s bench as Shelley Burns takes over as the Magicians’ new head coach for the upcoming season. Burns replaces Killeen Miller, who stepped down after starting the program 12 years ago.

Burns may be the new head coach, but she brings plenty of coaching experience, having coached the JV2 and JV teams since 2019.

“I have been a volleyball coach at Marblehead for the past seven years, and getting to continue with the varsity team is a huge opportunity that I am really excited about,” Burns said. “Killeen Miller has developed an incredible program in her time here, and to follow in her footsteps is a privilege.”

As the JV coach, Burns has worked with most of the girls on the team already, giving her some familiarity during the first few weeks of preseason.

“It makes a huge difference (already knowing the girls). Almost all of the players know and understand my style of coaching, and that makes the transition much easier,” Burns said. “Additionally, I have seen and learned what works best for this group in terms of motivation and how I provide feedback. It has made the start of the season feel almost seamless since we all already feel comfortable with each other.”

Numbers won’t be an issue in Marblehead this year, as Burns said she is “fortunate” to have a deep bench. The Magicians’ offense will be one of the best in the Northeastern Conference, too.

“When I look at the players not on the court, I can trust each person to go out onto the court at any given time and positively contribute to the game,” Burns said. “This is huge when taking injuries and illness into account, or when we just need to mix up what is happening during the game.”

“Our offense is also extremely talented,” Burns said. “Our hitters are consistently putting the ball in smart places and using their whole toolbox to execute points. They wouldn’t be able to do that without a strong serve receiver or setter, and we are fortunate to have both.” 

Leading the team this year are captains Erin Wilder and Sydney Faris.

“Sydney is one of those rare players that does everything she can to improve her play. She is always watching tape and college or professional-level games, seeking out new playing opportunities and trying different feedback from coaches. She’s our competitive leader, and when she is on the court, the team feels secure that we can overcome anything,” Burns said. “Erin is our steady leader. She is consistent in both her play and demeanor. Players feel comfortable talking to her and asking for support. Erin can always be counted on to keep the vibes high.”

There are plenty of names that Burns is expecting to have a big season this year.

“Lila Moniz, Sammy Walker and Faris will have huge contributions in the front row,” Burns said. “I expect we will hear more from Cassidy Klock in the back row as she takes on the role of defensive specialist. Sydney DaSilva will also be a big name as she takes over setting this year.”

One freshman to keep an eye on is Taylor Walker, according to Burns.

“Taylor is going to play a big part in our lineup this year,” she said. “As a freshman, she brings new energy and skill that we are very excited to have.”

With the regular season starting Wednesday, Burns is excited to watch her team compete against some talented teams in the NEC and outside of the conference.

“The team is excited to play Billerica, as they are a very talented out-of-conference team,” Burns said. “I am looking forward to seeing how we do against teams like Masconomet and Peabody, who always pose a threat in our conference.”
