Lynnfield continues its roll - Itemlive

LYNNFIELD — Lynnfield’s girls lacrosse team scored early and often Monday, punching its ticket to the Div. 4 quarterfinals with a 22-11 rout over No. 12 Seekonk (13-6) at Pioneer Stadium.

“According to what I’ve been told, I think this is as far as we’ve ever gone,” head coach Christina Serra said of the program’s state tournament history. “It feels literally amazing. I thought that we may have had an advantage going into the game due to having played a stronger schedule, but, nonetheless, it was nice that the girls had a strong start and really took control of the game early. Having played a tougher schedule worked in our favor today.”

You could say junior captains and Cape Ann League First Team All-Stars Hayden Valiton and Ava Damiani were unstoppable. Valiton finished with 10 goals and an assist, while Damiani scored seven goals and dished out three assists.

The dynamic duo’s numbers might have been higher but for a tremendous effort turned in by Seekonk goalie Olivia Rhodes, who Seekonk coach Sierra Cardenas applauded postgame.

“We knew that our focus needed to be on No. 22 (Damiani) and No. 14 (Valiton), so that was our game plan coming in,” Cardenas said. “Our goalie did a great job today. We recorded 12 saves for her, which is close to her game-record high, but that’s not a shock to us. I’m super proud of how she played today and was able to keep it somewhat close for a while.”

The Pioneers jumped out to a 7-1 lead during the first quarter. Damiani led the charge with four goals, while Valiton scored two and freshman Audrey Curley (3 goals) tallied one.

Lynnfield opened the second quarter with back-to-back goals from CAL Second Team All-Star junior Jordan Calichman (3 goals, 3 assists), and a solo shot from Damiani to bump the lead to 10-1 with a little less than nine minutes remaining in the half.

The Warriors stepped up the pace and, for the first time in the game, seemed to find some offensive rhythm, firing three consecutive goals to close the gap to 10-4 with three minutes to go in the half.

Valiton responded with three quick goals in less than a minute to give the Pioneers some breathing room at 13-4 with two minutes on the clock. Seekonk sandwiched two goals around a Curley strike to close out the half with the Pioneers on top, 14-6.

Neither team did much offensively during the third quarter, which ended with the Pioneers on top, 17-8.

Calichman found Valiton alone in front about a minute into the fourth quarter, making it 18-8 and triggering running time.

Seekonk’s Kylie O’Brien-Galligan and Evelyn Crane led the Warriors with three goals apiece.

Serra highlighted the play of Curley and junior goalie Olivia Sylvester (9 saves).

“Audrey’s been playing unbelievable,” Serra said. “She’s been doing a great job. That was her best game she’s played — the best by far. Her draw controls have been great. This is not even her main sport. She just picks up her stick right before the season starts – just like Ava and Jordan. She’s just been doing a great job for us, especially of late.

“Both goalies actually had some great saves today,” Serra said. “Olivia, especially, had some really important ones early.”

The Pioneers (11-8) hit the Pike and head west Thursday to take on No. 4 Nipmuc Regional in the Round of 8.
