To the editor:
May is National Mental Health Awareness Month, and this year’s theme, “More Good Days, Together,” reminds us that hope and healing happen through connection, compassion, and community.
At Samaritans Southcoast, our message is simple: “Here for Every Voice.” As Massachusetts’ full-service 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline agency, we provide statewide call, text, and chat support 24 hours a day, seven days a week for anyone experiencing emotional distress, loneliness, anxiety, depression, substance use concerns, or crisis.
Every day, our trained crisis counselors answer conversations from people who may feel overwhelmed or unsure where to turn. Sometimes people simply need someone to listen. Other times, they need lifesaving intervention, safety planning, referrals, or warm connections to additional behavioral health services.
Since the launch of 988, more than 200,000 call, text, and chat interactions have originated from people here in Massachusetts. We have seen firsthand how compassionate intervention can reduce distress, restore hope, and help people feel connected during vulnerable moments.
Mental health challenges affect every community, and seeking help is a sign of strength. If you or someone you know needs support, call or text 988, or chat at 988lifeline.org. Hope is just three numbers away.
