LYNN – The Lynn Housing Authority and Neighborhood Development (LHAND) awarded almost $25,000 to 26 Lynn high school seniors at its annual scholarship dinner in June.

The evening was coordinated by Cathy Rowe, John Ladd, and Kassandra Lopez. The celebration was well attended by students and families as well as City Councilor Hong Net, who expressed his pride and well wishes to the graduates. The LHAND Scholarship Committee had the opportunity to congratulate the graduates.

The scholarship foundation has been going strong since 1998 due to generous donations from individuals, families, businesses, and nonprofits in the community. Additionally, this important cause would not be possible without the help of high school guidance counselors. LHAND is committed to serving the community through affordable and quality housing, as well as investing in the higher education of the city’s youth.

This year’s scholarship was in honor of Laurie Walsh, former chair of LHAND Board of Commissioners and co-owner of John’s Oil. The scholarship program created a new application category in Walsh’s name for students wishing to go into the field of business. Her son, City Council President John Walsh, highlighted her achievements and generous nature before, awarding KIPP graduate Saja Suliman with the business scholarship. LHAND hopes to continue Walsh’s legacy by creating more opportunities for hardworking students for years to come.

The efforts put forth in this year’s applications were impressive. As more students choose alternative education paths after high school, such as beautician or trade school, LHAND has decided to add a new category for next year’s scholarship application: alternative careers in trades or technology. LHAND believes all students’ academic journeys should be embraced and supported as they enter this new and exciting chapter in life.
