There are many situations where you may find yourself spending lots of time out on the open road. Maybe you’re going on a road trip with friends and family, driving somewhere for your job, or even loading up your vehicle and moving across the country. Unfortunately, one of the largest risks when driving for an extended period is falling asleep and drifting off the road. Fortunately, we have some helpful tips for staying awake on the road that can keep you alert and alive.
Maintaining good posture when you’re on the road is a great way to keep yourself alert. You want to try and keep your shoulders back and your head held high. When you let your head lean forward too much, you may start to feel your eyelids get heavy. An equally worrisome action is tilting your head too far back into your headrest, which may feel like a pillow and leave you feeling tired.
One of the most common causes of auto accidents is sleepy drivers who lose control of their vehicles. If you think you’re getting tired and can’t possibly stay awake, don’t be afraid to pull over and get some rest. Taking a short nap can reenergize you and reduce the possibility of getting into a wreck.
One helpful tip for staying awake on the road is to make sure you have fuel in your body, not just your gas tank. We recommend having a little caffeine from coffee, tea, or an energy drink. If you can’t have caffeine, staying hydrated with plenty of water can keep you alert as well. We also recommend not driving hungry, so getting some protein from jerky or enjoying a nice healthy apple before getting on the road may help a lot.
It’s always easier to doze off on the road when you’re by yourself. Having some company in the car makes things more fun, and you can talk to each other to stay focused and even take turns driving if someone needs to catch a few winks. However, if that’s not an option, we suggest having someone on speakerphone or putting on a podcast to help you stay awake.
