LYNN — The Friends of Lynn Council on Aging has continued to support seniors in the community for more than two decades. For 15 years, Chairman George Harvey has been working to create fundraisers and events to bring awareness to seniors and their needs.
Harvey shared that he wants the public to know how much the donations and support positively impact the senior community in Lynn. At their most recent annual barbecue, which included a 50/50 raffle event, Harvey was able to raise and give $178 to one senior in need.
When the seniors receive the funds or prizes that are donated to the organization, it lifts their spirits in ways that bring them back to their youth, Harvey said.
“They’re just ecstatic,” Harvey said. “It’s like a little kid in the candy store. They’re very happy.”
One of the reasons Harvey helps organize these events with other members is to give back to those who are pillars in the Lynn society.
“They’re a vital part of our community … Let’s face it: We learn from our seniors, and they pay their dues,” Harvey said. “We want to pay it forward.”
Lately, Harvey and the rest of the Friends have been trying to engage the younger generation in joining the organization and volunteering at events.
“I think the older generation enjoys speaking with young people,” Harvey said. “They get their view on things and are able to share some experiences through their lives … I think that it’s a real educational and good experience for the younger generation.”
For those interested in joining the Friends of Lynn Council on Aging, the organization members meet on the fourth Thursday of every month at the Council on Aging’s Senior Center located at 37 Friend St. However, the organization does not meet during the months of July and August.
