LYNN — It was a good day for golf at Gannon Municipal Golf Course. The backyard rivalry between Lynn English and Lynn Classical just made it even better.
Talk about versatility. English left victorious with several strong performances.
“It was a good day,” said English coach Brett Molea. “Any time we get to play Classical in a rivalry game, it’s big, so we came out with a victory and had a lot of kids play well, which is awesome.”
And when Molea needed them most, his Bulldogs stepped up.
“Riley Driscoll played really well. We won his match, 5-4, and Jacoby Comeau played really well and won, 6-3,” Molea said. “Kyle Furlong with a win and AJ Lopez with a win, so we had a lot of guys play well today.”
Despite the city victory, Molea – like most coaches – thought there were aspects of the performance to improve upon.
“Coming up here every night, we get to practice,” Molea said. “So, just working on our short game… chipping and putting, we will keep doing that and keep getting better.”
On the other side, Classical coach Jack Morrison found positives in a negative. Jake Beyea led the charge in a losing effort.
“English has some good players at the top of their lineup that I thought we might have some trouble with, but we’ve got some good players, too,” he said. “And it’s golf and it’s hard, so you never know what’s going to happen.”
Like Molea, Morrison said “There is room for improvement.”
“All of our guys are baseball players and they are beginners at golf,” he said. “Golf is a hard game and there is a whole lot to learn, so they have a lot of work [to do] in every aspect.”
