If you don’t believe that records are made to be broken, then let me introduce you to the 2024 Lynnfield High football team.

From defense to offense to special teams, this year’s team has made a strong case that it may go down as one of the most prolific in program history in terms of setting new standards for excellence.

The Pioneers wrapped up the season Thanksgiving Day with a 43-36 win at North Reading. Division 1 High Point University baseball commit, senior wide receiver Madux Iovinelli, needed only 56 yards to break the record for single-season receiving yards. He got 58, finishing with 871 and breaking the record of 870 yards set by Jack Ford in 2019. Iovinelli also tied the single-game record for touchdown receptions when he snagged three against Dennis-Yarmouth in the tournament, tying Charlie Shove (1998), Louis Ellis (2016) and Ford (2018).

“You want Madux on your side. He will break the game wide open and keep opponents on their toes all game long,” said Lynnfield coach Pat Lamusta. “He is such a competitive player who goes out there and chases every ball and tackles like it’s the last one.”

St. Anselm football commit, senior captain and wide receiver Jesse Dorman, went into the game tied for the team record (13) in touchdown receptions, again with Ford who set the mark in 2019.

“Jesse has the ‘it’ factor,” Lamusta said. “He is the guy that Tyler (Adamo) could count on to run a route down to the single detail. He and Tyler had tremendous chemistry.”

Senior kicker Massimo LoGrasso set a new mark for most PATs in a single game with eight, topping the previous record of seven set by Danny Bronshvayg in 2015 and Scott Milne in 1985. He also tied the record for most field goals in a single season (3). He also had three field goals in 2023, bringing his career total to six to tie Steve Uilian’s record set in 2008-2010.

“Massimo is a very special talent,” Lamusta said. “He gave us such an advantage with his kicking ability. He was also a vocal leader on our team.”

Senior running back and captain Jared Bernabei, a Division 1 Marist College football commit, broke the season mark for tackles (107) previously set by DJ Cappachietti in 2021, thanks to what Lamusta described as a “massive game” against Fairhaven in the Division 6 semifinals. Bernabei came into the North Reading game with 110.

“It is no surprise that Jared is in the record conversation,” Lamusta said. “He works out like a maniac all year for football and sets the tone in the weight room for this team.”

The most prolific record-setter – no doubt – of the group is senior quarterback and captain Tyler Adamo, a Columbia University baseball commit. Going into the game, he had 5,093 career yards passing, shattering the previous record of 3,069 set by Matt Mortellite in 2016-2017 and finishing with 5,223.

Adamo also shattered Clay Marengi’s career touchdowns record of 39 set in 2016-2020. Adamo finished his career with 69. He also broke Marengi’s single-season record of 31, throwing three touchdowns against Fairhaven to bring his total to 33.

“Tyler is the type of player who is always competing against his last play,” Lamusta said. “He holds himself to such a high standard and has an impressive football IQ. He just gets it.”
