Common Items That Are Made Out of Aluminum

Aluminum is an abundant metal. We often think about it in terms of soda cans or foil, but it has many other uses. Aluminum is a very common metal that’s incredibly lightweight and resistant to rust and corrosion, so it lasts for a long time. Here are just some of the common items that are made out of aluminum that you probably have in your home right now without realizing it.

Pots and Pans

Unless you exclusively cook with stoneware or cast iron, you likely have some aluminum pots or skillets in your kitchen cabinets. Many nonstick pans are made from aluminum and typically make for affordable and long-lasting cookware. However, aluminum often reacts with acidic ingredients like citrus or tomato, which may result in a metallic taste. We suggest avoiding aluminum pans when cooking those acid-heavy ingredients.

Zippers

Zippers became much more commonplace when the fashion industry started using them in the 1950s. Now, many zippers are one of the most common items made of aluminum. There are steel or plastic zippers, but aluminum ones are easy to use and much more prominent on jeans or hoodies. Metal fasteners have existed for a long time, but we owe the modern zipper design and manufacturing to a Swedish inventor known as the father of the modern zipper. Whether you have one on your clothes, bags, or other items in your house, the odds are good you have an aluminum zipper somewhere.

Ladders and Stepladders

The main purpose of a ladder or stepladder is to move it from place to place and set it up so you can reach higher areas. When you pick up a ladder, you may notice that it’s usually not very heavy, despite being a sturdy metal climbing option. The lightweight nature of aluminum makes it the perfect material for ladders so that you can move it around without overexerting yourself. Remember, the difference between a ladder and a step ladder is that you need to lean a ladder against a wall or other stable surface. You can unfold a step ladder and safely climb it on any flat terrain.
