Following Iran’s attack on Israel, U.S. Rep. Seth Moulton released a statement calling for Congress to come together in support of a “robust national security supplemental that includes defensive munitions for Israel’s Iron Dome and David’s Sling.”
Moulton released the statement on Sunday, after Iran launched hundreds of drones and missiles into Israel the night before. The attack was in response to an Israeli airstrike on the Iranian consulate in Damascus, Syria that killed 16 people, including two Iranian generals, on April 1.
He said that Iran risked causing a “catastrophic regional war” by launching the “unprecedented attacks.”
“Iran’s evil regime murders its own people at home and innocents abroad, funding terrorist groups across the Middle East — from Hamas and Hezbollah to the Houthis and proxies in Iraq that have killed scores of U.S. troops,” Moulton said in the statement.
Moulton said the attack was defeated due to the superiority of Israel’s missile defense systems, such as the Iron Dome and David’s Sling, and the presence of American troops and allies nearby. However, he said that Congress must come together to prevent a successful attack in the future, adding that it is in the best interest of both the United States and Israel for the current situation to not escalate into a full regional war.
“As Israel weighs its next steps, it is critical that it remains focused on finishing its operations in Gaza and achieving a ceasefire-for-hostages deal — not on starting a new war while still having no endgame for their first,” Moulton said in the statement.
Finally, Moulton directed his words toward his Republican colleagues in the House who he said are “blaming President Biden for these attacks.”
“Your (GOP) inaction is what is actually putting Israel’s and our own national security at risk — just like you have done by holding up Ukraine funding,” Moulton said in the statement.
Moulton then said Speaker of the House Mike Johnson should listen to American allies rather than “unpatriotic extremists” and bring the Senate-approved aid bill to a vote.
“It shouldn’t be hard for the Republican Party to support democracies like Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan rather than catering to Russia, China, and insurrection-backing extremists in their own ranks,” Moulton said in the statement.
