ROUNDUP: St. John’s Prep takes Frates crown in overtime

The hockey Eagles took on Pope Francis in the Pete Frates Winter Classic Thursday afternoon, escaping in overtime after Jake Vana tucked a breakaway goal two minutes into the sudden death period.

It was The Prep’s second Frates championship in program history, and couldn’t have been done without goalie AJ Farese, who registered back-to-back shutouts.

BOYS HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 4
Malden Catholic 1

With the Serino championship on the line, St. Mary’s snatched it in 4-1 fashion over Malden Catholic.

The Spartans led 3-1 after the second period before potting an insurance goal in the third. Cam McGonagle (2), Finn Racki, and Chase Collins were the goal-scorers.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Greater Lawrence 53
Saugus 39

In the David Green Memorial basketball tournament, Saugus bowed out at the hands of Greater Lawrence.

“We struggled to get our offense going in the first half,” said Saugus coach Joe Bertrand.

Danny Shea (10 points), Cam Soroko (10), Isaiah Rodriguez (9), Cam Victor (7), and Ryan Shea (7) led the way on the scorers’ sheet.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Bishop Fenwick 48
Medfield 43

After the Bishop Feehan defeat on Friday night, Fenwick’s girls were back on track in the Rivard Tournament at Oliver Ames.

Cecilia Kay had 16 points and 16 rebounds, while Caitlin Boyle registered 14 points and seven rebounds, among other strong performances.

“Sophomores Anna Fertonani and Celia Neilson played well overall with great defense and four assists apiece,” said coach Adam DeBaggis.

Fenwick upped its record to 4-1 and plays Walpole in Friday’s title game at 2 p.m.
