SAUGUS — A 62-year-old man from Boston is facing a litany of charges tied to a crash Monday night, when he veered off Route 1 and slammed into a parked car, flipping it and the car he was driving over into the former Boston Market, according to the Police Department.
The man, whose name will not be released until the charges are processed, will be charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle, operating a motor vehicle with a suspended license, operating an unregistered motor vehicle, and possession of a Class A drug, according to Assistant Chief Ronald Giorgetti. In the wake of the crash, the man was taken to Massachusetts General Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries. No updates on his condition were immediately available Tuesday morning.
Saugus police responded to the former Boston Market at 168 Broadway at 7:23 p.m. Monday evening. They found two cars, a Toyota Prius and a 2010 Volvo, inside the shuttered restaurant.
The man had allegedly been traveling at an excessive speed on the northbound side of Route 1 when his Volvo slammed into the parked and unoccupied Prius outside the restaurant, according to the department.
Giorgetti said both vehicles rolled “at least once” before ending up inside the restaurant.
