LYNN — Two fugitives wanted for the attempted murder of a New York Police Department detective were arrested in Lynn on Tuesday night.
The suspects — D’Angelo Caraballo, 25, and Sneider Bautista, 24 — were apprehended after a multi-day search throughout New York and Massachusetts. According to the NYPD, the suspects stabbed the detective seven times in an attempted robbery on Oct. 2 in the Bronx. They were last seen fleeing the scene on an e-bike.
Massachusetts State Police said Caraballo and Bautista were found hiding in the basement of a home in Lynn at approximately 12:20 a.m. They were booked by Lynn Police ahead of their arraignment in Lynn District Court and are expected to be returned to New York to face charges.
The NYPD detective was transported to a nearby hospital and has since been released.
The U.S. Marshals Service and the NY/NJ Regional Fugitive Task Force, along with the Massachusetts State Police and the Lynn Police Department headed the investigation.
“The attempted murder of an off-duty NYPD detective is an attack on every member of law-enforcement, and these two fugitives will now face justice,” head of the U.S. Marshals Service for the District of Massachusetts Dennis Matulewicz said in a statement. “These arrests are the result of the exceptional teamwork between the U.S. Marshals Service Fugitive Task Forces and our outstanding state and local partners who worked tirelessly on this investigation.”
According to a statement by the Department of Homeland Security, Caraballo and Bautista were identified by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s (ICE) as illegal immigrants from the Dominican Republic. Both have previously been arrested on charges and were later released by local law enforcement before ICE could issue immigration holds.
