Lynn Classical’s football team (0-1) trailed just 7-6 after the first quarter against Winchester, but had no answers from there and fell, 38-6, in enemy territory.

Winchester led 28-6 at halftime and 31-6 after three.

After the hosts’ game-opening touchdown, Classical responded with a rushing score from quarterback Mark Walsh. The big play of the drive was a 30-plus-yard completion from Walsh to Kalu Nasky.

“Winchester is a great team and program — something we aspire to be,” said second-year Classical coach Brian Smith. “Mark Walsh scored our lone touchdown and Emerson Lara Castro was a bright spot. We have to get back to work next week and be ready for another big challenge in Medfield.”

Lynnfield’s Lucas Deraps (130 yards rushing) bolted for a 97-yard touchdown in the second quarter, while James Pasquale (70 yards receiving) caught a 41-yard score from Spencer Brown (150 yards passing) later in the frame. Mason Fusco converted both extra-point attempts for the Pioneers (1-0).

Deraps made 15 tackles, joined by defensive standouts Joel Attubatto (8 tackles) and Joe Rosa (5 tackles, sack).

Visiting Saugus (0-1) ran into trouble in the second half after trailing just 8-0 at halftime. Eli Fialho (106 yards passing), Dawin Camillo (48 yards rushing), Isaiah Santiago (22 yards rushing), Ryan Moreira (2 catches, 60 yards receiving), and Richie Nuzzo Jr. (3 catches, 48 yards receiving) led the Sachems.

Hailey Gilmore compiled six saves between the pipes, but Marblehead was blanked on enemy turf. Lucy Church was “tremendous” defensively against Masco threat Maggie Blosser, according to Magicians’ coach Lisa Wales.

“I’m really proud of the team today,” Wales said. “We didn’t play well in our first game vs. Danvers that ended in a 2-2 tie, but they showed up today against Masco, which is one of the top teams in the state. Masco’s keeper made an unbelievable save that would have tied the game for us.”

“All the girls were playing very strong in the first half,” said first-year coach Josselyn Guzman. “This really provided the opportunity to rotate our players, so we had high stamina all game.”

Despite strong showings from Grace Sylvester, Bella Silva, Emma Wardle, Brielle Broughton, and Olivia Ball, the Tanners were tamed by the Panthers.

“The score doesn’t reflect the fight and effort the girls showed,” said Peabody coach Katrina Silva. “We’ll continue to build, learn from this game, and get better together.”

It was a scoreless game midway through the third quarter, but Beverly tucked a pair of goals to pull away.

“But our defense didn’t make it easy for them to get through,” said Marblehead coach Ali Carey. “Maggie Svencer, Hayden Mitchell, Annie Wales, and Kaylie Corbett played every minute of tonight’s game and were relentless, playing 100 percent until the last whistle. As a coach, I can’t ask for anything more than that.”

Classical lost the second set, but bounced back in scores of 25-15, 20-25, 25-7, and 25-12 to start the City Tournament. The Rams, who improved to 30-0 all-time against the Bulldogs, were led by Sejla Iriskic (10 kills, 9 digs, 5 aces), twin Melisa Iriskic (15 assists, 2 kills, 5 aces, 5 digs), and Salma Motassim (4 kills, 5 aces, 3 digs).

“It’s always nice to start the season with a win,” said Classical coach Chris LeBlanc. “The girls played hard all night. We made far too many service errors (19) tonight. If we plan to hang with St. Mary’s tomorrow night (5:30 p.m. at Lynn English for the championship), we need to clean that up. Setting that aside, I was very happy with the effort. We know we’re a better serving team than that. Coming into the season with a very new starting lineup, you never know what will happen and all of the girls stepped into their new roles seamlessly.”

After a bogey on the first hole, St. Mary’s Bobby MacAulay (42 points) scored an eagle on the fourth hole to finish 3-under par at D.W. Field Golf Course in Brockton. He “played super,” according to coach Jay Fiste.

Rounding out St. Mary’s (2-1; 1-0 Catholic Central League) top seven were Luke Malcuit (30), Gavin Retos (30), Dalton Diozzi (29), Brennan Malloy (29), Ryan Gil (27), and Brayden Nicosia (24).

“I’m proud of the team and everybody played solid — all the way from one to 10,” Fiste said. “It wasn’t the most difficult course, but they stepped up and played really well. We have an unbelievable supporting cast (around MacAulay) and anybody can step it up on any given day. Dalton Diozzi is off to a great start, as well as Luke Malcuit.”
