Netflix is coming to this East End haven — with a star-studded cast

A Netflix comedy featuring Whoopi Goldberg, Vivica A. Fox, Vanessa Williams and Jenifer Lewis begins filming on Shelter Island this week.

Production of “Women Like Us” is expected to take place between Sept. 1 and Oct. 1 at several Island locations, including Crescent Beach, the Pridwin and Sunset Beach Hotel, with South Ferry also under consideration.

Michelle Obama is an executive producer of the film, which follows a recently widowed woman whose sister and longtime friends bring her to the East End on what would have been her 30th wedding anniversary. The production describes the story as “an emotional journey of healing and sisterhood.”

Production spokesman Brian Ferguson outlined plans for the shoot during the Shelter Island Town Board’s Aug. 18 work session.

A drone is expected to be used for scenes showing the women arriving and leaving the Island. Mr. Ferguson said filming is not expected to require road closures, although moving crews and equipment could cause occasional traffic slowdowns.

Vehicles connected with the production are expected to park at the Sunset Beach Hotel lot, possibly the Perlman Music Center and, at times, spaces overlooking Crescent Beach.

The production company will provide its own security, including a boat offshore in case of a water emergency. Shelter Island Police Chief Jim Read said the department also expects to have a marine unit available and an officer on site to coordinate with the film crew.

Chief Read suggested the town set a $10,000 fee for the production, with any portion not used to cover town-related costs returned.

“In general, I think it’s a nice thing for the community,” he said.
