PEABODY — As part of new legislation to combat wrong-way driving, the Massachusetts Department of Transportation is installing wrong-way driver detection devices along Route 128.
These measures will be implemented at northbound and southbound ramps between Peabody and Gloucester.
Drivers should expect to see construction operations Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., until further notice. Construction is weather dependent and dates are subject to change at any time.
MassDOT officials are encouraging motorists to reduce speed and drive with caution in work zones, as the installation will increase worker foot traffic and will require temporary shoulder closures.
Advanced message boards will inform drivers and guide them through the construction areas.
These wrong-way driver countermeasures are part of new state laws enacted in response to recent deaths from wrong-way vehicle crashes.
“Our Commonwealth [is] committed to doing everything possible to prevent the type of tragic accidents that took the lives of Sgt. Jeremy Cole, Chris Dailey, and Trooper Trainor,” Senate Minority Leader Bruce Tarr said.
This commitment is evident in the installation of “state-of-the-art” wrong-way driving detection and prevention devices. These machines have been tested in other states and have proven to be highly effective, Tarr said.
Tarr said that the installation “represents real and significant progress that will make our roadways safer and honor those whose lives have been lost to wrong-way driving by dramatically reducing the odds it will happen in the future.”
