LYNN – Commuters traveling from Lynn to Boston by ferry now have a new way to reach some of the city’s busiest destinations following the launch of the MBTA’s Harbor Loop Ferry.
Gov. Maura Healey, Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll, Interim Transportation Secretary and MBTA General Manager Phillip Eng, lawmakers and transportation officials gathered Tuesday to celebrate the new weekday service, known as the F10 Harbor Loop, which began operating June 29.
The route connects Lovejoy Wharf near North Station, Central Wharf at the Aquarium, Commonwealth Pier in the Seaport, and Logan International Airport, providing riders with an additional transit option for the cost of a subway ride.
For Lynn commuters, the new route offers a convenient way to continue traveling around Boston after arriving by ferry.
“The new Harbor Loop Ferry Service will be a great new opportunity for Lynn commuters, whether coming by commuter rail or ferry, to quickly get around Boston once they arrive,” Mayor Jared C. Nicholson said. “It represents an important next step to building out a region-wide water transit system.”
State officials said the Harbor Loop is intended to strengthen connections between existing ferry routes, commuter rail, and the subway while reducing traffic congestion by expanding water transportation throughout Boston Harbor.
“We’ve made tremendous progress making the MBTA safer and more reliable, and today we’re giving people another affordable, convenient way to get where they need to go,” Healey said. “For the price of a subway ride, commuters, residents, and visitors can travel between some of Boston’s busiest destinations by water.”
Driscoll said ferries continue to play an important role in the state’s transportation network.
“Whether you’re commuting to work, catching a flight, or visiting the city, this service gives riders another affordable option while helping reduce congestion on our roads,” she said.
The Harbor Loop is operated by Bay State Cruise Company and runs weekdays approximately every 30 minutes during peak commuting periods.
Morning service operates counterclockwise between Lovejoy Wharf, Aquarium, Seaport, and Logan Airport from 6:10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Evening service runs clockwise from 3:55 p.m. until 7:50 p.m. There is no midday or late-evening service.
One-way fares are $2.40 for adults and $1.10 for reduced-fare riders, matching MBTA subway and Zone 1A commuter rail fares. Riders can pay using Tap to Ride, the MBTA mTicket app, cash or credit card onboard, or eligible commuter rail passes. CharlieCards are not accepted on MBTA ferry routes.
The Harbor Loop complements the existing Seaport Ferry and provides additional connections to other MBTA ferry services, including routes serving Lynn, Winthrop, Quincy, Charlestown, East Boston, and Hingham/Hull.
Eng said the new route reflects the administration’s continued investment in expanding water transportation throughout Greater Boston.
“We have seen how water transportation has been embraced by the public, and under the Healey-Driscoll Administration, we are committed to improving water transportation options for all,” Eng said.
The Healey administration said the Harbor Loop is part of its broader effort to modernize the MBTA, expand ferry service and improve connections between public transportation systems across eastern Massachusetts.
