LYNN — Despite temperatures reaching nearly 90 degrees, runners showed up in Lynn Woods and enjoyed a “retro” ABCD course. The “old-school” course, re-created by Trail Master Jeff Cook, was based on the high school course from 1979.
It was originally measured by Joe Abelon, Tom McDermott, David Quinn, Paul Quinn, and Roger Pelham to be between 2.8 and three miles.
Abelon’s original vision was to create a cross-country environment where spectators could catch multiple glimpses of athletes representing Lynn English, Lynn Classical, Lynn Tech, and St. Mary’s.
This week’s long course was 4.9 miles, sending runners into the Woods and uphill. When they reached the four loops of the original course, volunteers pointed the way to keep them on course. Forty-eight runners saw some of the Woods’ must-see highlights, including Goat Path and Steel Tower.
Lynn’s Rafael Villatoro secured the top spot with a time of 33:33, followed by Wakefield’s Peter Swain (34:42) and Lynn’s Matt Veiga (35:28). Wilmington’s Vicky McDermott led the women’s field in 41:43, with Boxford’s Abby Bent Mckie (44:23) and Swampscott’s Anna Metaxatos (44:28) rounding out the top three.
The 1.9-mile short course featured 32 participants and included a climb to Steel Tower. Woburn’s Jeromy Ismuns took first place in 13:30, ahead of Saugus’ Thomas D’Amico (13:44) and Boxford’s Devlin Hixon (14:06). On the women’s side, Melrose’s Judy Tasker was victorious in 21:14, followed by Peabody’s Denise Murphy (21:47) and Lynn’s Ashley Rodriguez (21:58).
Due to extreme heat, the kids’ race was cancelled. The series continues with next week’s Tour de Lynn Woods No. 2, led by Trail Master Deirdre Lowe, of Salem.
