SAUGUS — Saugus TV has officially announced the date for its Starlight Cinema, a project that has been in the works for quite some time now.
The station will host its first movie night on July 28, with doors opening at approximately 5:30 p.m. and the movie beginning at 7:30 p.m., at Parcher Field located next to the Kasabuski Memorial Rink at 201 Forest St. A rain date is set for Aug. 4 at the same times and place.
The event will be free and will give families a chance to spend a night outside watching “Jumanji” (1995), featuring Robin Williams. Food and refreshments will also be available for purchase from food trucks throughout the evening. One featured vendor will be Tiffany’s Tasty Treats.
Maureen Whitcomb, a host, producer, and camera operator for Saugus TV, has been involved in getting the project (and cameras) rolling.
Back in April, during the cultural council’s grant meeting, she shared that the cinema aims to bring the community together.
There was hope that the movie could be hosted at Stackpole Field, which is undergoing renovations, to bring the community out to see the work done; it will be held at Parcher Field instead.
The event will feature a large LED movie screen, allowing the film to begin before the night falls completely dark. Saugus TV noted that the earlier start time will enable families with young children to enjoy the movie and return home at a reasonable hour.
The screening will also include a photo booth featuring a giant popcorn-themed arch, a giant Jenga set, and other entertainment.
Local businesses and community sponsors will also be at the event with informational displays and activities.
Custom T-shirts featuring a unique graphic design created by Saugus TV’s John Prudent will be available for purchase and custom-made on-site. Shirts will also be available at Saugus Founders Day.
Starlight Cinema is made possible through the support of community partners and sponsors. SCTV is currently seeking additional sponsors to help support this free community program. Businesses and organizations interested in sponsorship opportunities are encouraged to contact Saugus Community Television. Volunteers are also needed to assist with the event. Anyone interested in volunteering is encouraged to contact Whitcomb at Saugus Community Television, the station said.
The hope is to continue hosting Starlight Cinema events, with the first night anticipated to be successful, and to announce a special Halloween-themed movie night later in the year.
The station is encouraging residents to bring lawn chairs, blankets, family, and friends for an evening of “outdoor entertainment, community spirit, and summertime fun.”
