Lynn Public Library steps into a new age

LYNN — The Lynn Public Library has received a technology boost, thanks to a state initiative that aims to increase residents’ access to digital tools.

The library received 95 new tablets, 80 laptops, 24 desktops, two interactive whiteboards, and two charging carts. The devices were distributed through the Connected and Online Program, a $28.5 million initiative providing more than 200 Massachusetts-based organizations with nearly 27,000 internet-enabled devices and more than 20,000 pieces of supporting equipment.

Funded through the U.S. Treasury’s Capital Projects Fund and primarily implemented by the Massachusetts Broadband Institute at MassTech, the Connected and Online Program is designed to improve access to education, workforce development, and health care services, with a particular focus on Gateway Cities and rural communities. Devices are being offered through lending programs or at locations accessible to the public.

“Massachusetts residents rely on the internet every day to find work, take classes, access health care, and build stronger community ties,” said Gov. Maura Healey. “The Connected and Online Program helps residents improve their lives by equipping them with the capacity to directly access services and opportunities.”

Lynn Public Library Director Theresa Hurley said the tablets and laptops are available for residents to check out three weeks at a time.

“They’re adding to our lending library, so residents can take them home and access materials,” Hurley said. “And the new desktops are equipped with video monitors and headsets, so people can come in and do telehealth appointments or job interviews. I think it’s really helping to close the digital divide.”

In addition to the library, other Lynn organizations, including Girls Inc., LEO, Lynn Community Health, and the New American Association of Massachusetts, also received new devices through the initiative.

“We appreciate the partnership with the state as we enhance the technology offerings at the Lynn Public Library,” Mayor Jared C. Nicholson said. “This additional equipment will greatly benefit our residents who may not have access to computers and the internet, and we are pleased to continue to upgrade our fantastic library.”
