LYNN — The Community Development Office is moving ahead with an overhaul of the small boat docks backed by a $200,000 state grant.
The Conservation Commission approved a dock upgrade on Tuesday night that adds about 3,000 square feet of more storm-resilient dock space, on the condition that the project follow state fisheries safeguards. Citing guidance from the Division of Marine Fisheries (DMF), the commission required a slow start to creating a foundation and the use of a turbidity curtain, which is used to contain sediment and debris in bodies of water in an effort to limit short-term impacts on local fisheries.
Katie Moore, of Tetra Tech, a consulting firm focused on water, environment, and sustainable infrastructure, said the small boat docks are approximately 4,900 square feet and are made of timber.
The docks currently used at the marina are intended to remain in the water year-round.
A new timber or aluminum frame and floats will be installed, expanding the area to approximately 7,900 square feet of dockage, Moore said.
“That’s just due to more robust docks, really just for resiliency, and (to) make sure things stay in good condition for an extended period here,” she said.
Additionally, 26 steel foundation piles between 12.75 and 18 inches will be installed for structural stability, Moore said.
Access to the marina will also be improved as part of the revitalization efforts, Moore said.
Currently, there are two access points to the marina on the connecting boardwalk. It will soon be consolidated into one access point with a “really long gangway” leading down from the boardwalk to a landing float, which then connects out to the small boat docks and the rest of the marina, Moore said.
She added that the new access point will be ADA-accessible, “which currently, at low tide, the two ramps that are out there are incredibly steep.”
Moore said, “The original Marina was constructed in 1984, and really, what they’re trying to do here is reconstruct or replace some of the key deteriorated components just due to the age of the marina itself, and to also support some of the city’s efforts to revitalize and kind of promote use of the harbor in the public access within the waterfront.”
Built by private citizen Irvin Nebelkopf in the late ’70s, the marina is made up of two docking facilities: one for boats approximately 19 feet and under, and another for boats larger.
The city purchased the Seaport Landing Marina in 1983, and it sits in Lynn Harbor adjacent to the Lynn and Volunteer Yacht Clubs.
