LYNN — Under clear skies, the Lynn Woods Summer Series completed its third week with more than 130 runners taking to the trails. The event marked the inaugural “Tour de Lynn Woods” of the season, featuring courses designed by local Trail Master Pete Orrall, of Lynn.
Orrall said the evening served as an opportunity to showcase scenic views of Walden Pond through exciting, lesser-known technical trails.
In the kids’ race, 9-year-old Thomas Faria, of Danvers, secured the victory on the 1.59-mile course with a time of 13:47. He was followed by 7-year-old Parker Beal (14:21), of Lynnfield, and 8-year-old Grant Gwilliam (20:10), of Swampscott.
On the girls’ side, 8-year-old Giulia Bertoldi, of Cambridge, led the pack with a time of 17:35. Allison Gwilliam and 3-year-old Lilly Gwilliam, the evening’s youngest competitor, rounded out the top three for the females.
The 2.8-mile mini tour saw 61 runners compete on an out-and-back route along the reservoir. Peabody’s Jacob Gil and Lynn’s Awan Awan crossed the line together with a time of 18:16. Following closely behind was Lynn’s Will Potter in 18:25. For the women, Beverly’s Haytey Mahan finished first in 22:36, followed by Swampscott’s Stephanie Lannon (25:55) and Salem’s Shannon Griffin (26:47).
The 5.6-mile long course provided a grueling test of navigation through rocks and roots. Lynn residents Matt Viega (46:05) and Marvin Velasquez (46:26) took the top two spots for the men, with Johnny Strzepek (48:17), of Danvers, placing third. Somerville’s Katia Bertoldi led the women’s field with a time of 58:48, followed by Giulia Bussone (1:01:57), of Manchester, and Kimberly Zia (1:05:53), of Lynn.
The series continues with next week’s “Baby Barkley” race. Participants should note an earlier start time of 6 p.m. with options to complete three or four laps for a total of 10-12 miles.
