LYNNFIELD — Lynnfield Middle School has announced that Michael Walsh has been named the new principal of Lynnfield Middle School pending successful contract negotiations.

The position formally belonged to Stephen Ralston, who took a leave of absence in April and is set to depart from the district on July 1. Superintendent Tom Geary announced the departure after racial incidents in the middle school came to the forefront of the 2025-26 school year.

At multiple School Committee meetings, Ralston, who has been part of the district since 2005, received partial blame for how the school handled the incidents.

In his statement, Geary said, “Following a comprehensive search process that included input from our interview committees, staff, and community members, Mr. Walsh stood out as an exceptional leader dedicated to student growth, culture building, collaborative leadership, and academic excellence. He brings a wealth of educational experience to our district, along with a deep commitment to fostering an inclusive, supportive environment where every student can thrive.”

Walsh has experience in administration and in the classroom. He is currently principal at the West Intermediate School in Wilmington and was previously assistant principal, dean of student climate and culture, and an eighth-grade math teacher at Emily G. Wetherbee School in Lawrence.

Walsh holds a Master’s of Education from American International College and a bachelor’s degree from Bentley University.

Currently, Assistant Superintendent Adam Federico is the interim principal of the middle school and will continue to hold the position until July 1, the date on which Walsh will begin, pending contract negotiations.

This change in leadership comes as the public continues to search for answers regarding racism in the district.
