MARBLEHEAD — After raising more than $175,000 in funding for public school grants, the nonprofit organization Friends of Marblehead Public Schools has announced the completion of its most successful grant season to date.
This past school year, FMPS secured 15 grants to support Marblehead classrooms. These grants span all grade levels and subjects across the Marblehead school district and help fund projects that go beyond what the public school budget can provide. This gives students the chance to create and participate in programs that provide enriching experiences.
“This grant season is a testament to the generosity and creativity of our community,” said Jess Chamberlin, president of FMPS. “Every grant we fund is an investment in the students and educators who make Marblehead schools exceptional.”
Combined with the 2024-25 school year, FMPS secured 29 grants for Marblehead Public Schools, marking its 35th anniversary grant season the largest in FMPS history.
Kate Tetirick, a member of FMPS, stated that much of their success for this season stemmed from an earlier start to fundraising. In turn, the community had more time to involve themselves in fundraising efforts through events such as Principal for a Day and open houses, giving FMPS a huge boost
This school year included the special addition of a grant written and submitted by students themselves. Third graders who attend Brown Elementary School wrote the Nets for Success grant, in the hope that their school could receive funding for new soccer nets, as opposed to the cones being used, and better recess equipment.
“While many of our grant ideas come from teachers, who are closest to students’ day-to-day needs, we encourage proposals from the entire community,” Tetirick said. “We were especially excited to fund several outstanding projects led by students, reflecting the creativity, initiative, and engagement of Marblehead’s young people.”
These updates to outdoor activities will help students at Brown Elementary become more involved, especially for those students who are interested in soccer. Additionally, it could inspire more students to be proactive in the betterment of their communities.
As for this upcoming school year of 2026-27, students have already started proposing grants. To name one, at Glover Elementary, a student and mom team proposed the Glover Regiment grant. If implemented, this grant would provide a hands-on and screen-free inside recess option for classrooms.
Marblehead’s community and the efforts by the FMPS are a great reminder that pouring into your community can have amazing benefits for everyone who lives there.
Now that the hard work is over, FMPS is turning its focus toward its signature celebration, the annual Summer Soirée. This event also helps fund the next cycle of grants for Marblehead schools to ensure another successful year.
“The event is open to the entire community and will feature live music, food, and beverages,” Tetirick said.
The event will take place on June 20, hosted by David and Davin Wedel, at 2 Coolidge Road at 6:30 p.m.
Tickets and sponsorship opportunities for the event are available at friendsofmarblehead.org/soiree.
