Roundup: Seniors step up in Lynnfield

Tuesday’s game was for the Lynnfield baseball seniors, and they “led by example” on Senior Day, according to coach John O’Brien. The Pioneers (8-8) cruised by Rockport 10-0.

Seniors Harris Hadzihasanovic (3 H, 3 RBI), Dylan Nguyen (2 H), and Matt Tracy (RBI, 2 R) did offensive damage. Also contributing were Chase McEwen (2 H), James Cassidy (2 H, 2 RBI), and winning pitcher Joey Wozniak (5 IP, H, 6 K).

“We needed someone to throw strikes and that’s what he did,” O’Brien said of Wozniak. “We struggled Monday against Newburyport . . . and the kids came ready to play today.”

O’Brien and company return Thursday for a road game against Amesbury. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m.

BASEBALL

Swampscott 14
Winthrop 0

Swampscott’s David Palmer (5 IP, 3 H, BB, 6 K) went the distance and picked up his second shutout of the spring. The Big Blue (12-3, 9-1 Northeastern Conference) offense was led by Chase Groothuis (3 H, 5 RBI), as well as Sam Baran, Dylan DiFilippo, Michael Collins, and Jamison Ford, all of whom collected RBI.

SOFTBALL

Minuteman Regional 7
Lynn Classical 3

Olivia Rodriguez and Brooke Braswell smashed home runs, but Classical (10-5) fell after the game was tied, 2-2, during the fifth inning. Rams’ coach Joe Morin credited Minuteman pitcher Alyssa Collins.

“Easily the best pitcher we saw all year and she was able to slow us down with 17 strikeouts,” Morin said. “When we executed our bunts, we got on base, but that’s the type of pitcher we want to see for the state tournament.”

BOYS LACROSSE

St. John’s Prep 13
Catholic Memorial 3

Behind Ryan McCarthy (4 goals), Thias Tolo (2), and Cam Mitchell (2), St. John’s earned a share of its seventh consecutive Catholic Conference title. The Eagles won 18 of 20 face-offs, courtesy of Will Crawford (7/7), Ranger Gregg (6/7), and Brody McMahon (5/6).

BOYS TENNIS

Marblehead 4
Beverly 1

Despite a first singles loss, Marblehead (12-2) had enough in the tank to tame the Panthers. TJ Kelly and Alex Boehning prevailed in singles action, while the doubles teams of Adam Loughlin/Filip Wabno and Cordt Menzler/Andrew Halvorson cruised by the opposition.

GIRLS TENNIS

Swampscott 5
Gloucester 0

Swampscott (13-0) stayed unbeaten as Nikki Carr, Ginger Gregoire, and Ana Eccles rattled off singles wins. The doubles teams of Ava/Alexia O’Donnell and Eve Byrne/Sasha Fafel also triumphed.

Lynnfield 5
Danvers 0

Lily Alves, Kami Khiat, and Kathleen Brown went 1-2-3 in singles play as Lynnfield upped its record to 10-2. Olivia Asaad/Emma Wagon and Charlotte Beccia/Charlotte Rose recorded doubles victories.

VOLLEYBALL

Lynn Tech 3
Salem Academy 2

Through set scores of 25-20, 25-23, 24-26, 21-25, and 15-9, the Tigers (6-10) escaped enemy territory behind Elmer Duran (35 assists, 19 digs, 3 aces, 2 kills), Felipe Oliveira (17 kills, block), Amauri Bermudez (13 kills, block), Sam Caraballo (15 digs), Anthony Reid (14 digs), and Manny Dosreis (7 kills, 3 aces).

GIRLS TRACK AND FIELD

Lynn Classical placed seventh out of eight teams in the Greater Boston League Meet. Mariana De Leon earned three top-three finishes, including a personal record in the mile.

The 4x400m relay team of Leon, Bianca Christalin, Macee Deronzil, and Jayliana Wesley “delivered its best performance of the season,” according to coach Brendan Morris. The group ranked eighth prior to the meet, but finished second.

Christalin also placed fourth in the 400mh.
