The Saugus softball team (7-6) earned a 7-3 win over Winthrop, moving above .500 on the season.

Freshman Layla Demonte went 2-for-3 with a double and three RBIs. Captains Sydney Deleidi and Ari Chianca each contributed, with Deleidi driving in two runs and Chianca scoring twice.

Sofia McCarrier pitched a complete game, allowing four hits and striking out four. She also added an RBI at the plate.

Aubrey Demonte added an RBI and had a “Gold Glove” performance, according to Saugus coach Steve Almquist.

“It was a very well-played game by both sides,” Almquist said. “Both teams played great defense and had great pitching.”

SOFTBALL

St. Mary’s 10

Archbishop Williams 2

St. Mary’s struck early and didn’t look back. Catherine Newbury singled in the bottom of the first inning driving in two runs to jump start the Spartans. 

Aliza Crean-Oviedo allowed four hits and two runs (one earned) while striking out seven over seven innings.

Angelina Owumi led St. Mary’s with three RBIs, going 2-for-4.

Lynn Classical 24

Somerville 9

Lynn Classical’s Brooke Braswell and Olivia Rodriguez each finished with three hits, three RBIs and three runs scored. Braswell also homered, while Rodriguez had two doubles.

McKenna Duncan added two hits and three RBIs.

Jalen Debenedetto and Karen Diaz Cruz each recorded their first varsity hits for Lynn Classical, which improved to 7-3.

BASEBALL

Lynn English 13

Chelsea 3

Diobel Guzman earned the win for the Bulldogs, who took care of business on the road. Guzman pitched three innings, allowing two hits, walking two and striking out two.

Julian Rodriguez and Gilbert Gava each recorded two hits.

Lynn English was disciplined in the batter’s box, drawing seven walks, and was aggressive on the basepaths. Ewerd Beato, Angel Thomas and Rodriguez all finished with multiple steals.

Lynn Classical 11

Somerville 3

The Rams protected Fraser Field with a dominant win over Somerville. Braeden Ohanessian got the start and delivered, going six innings while allowing four hits, two walks and two earned runs, striking out seven.

“Ohanessian was in control of the game again. He’s been consistent every start,” Lynn Classical coach Jason Rogato said. “We can count on him to give us quality innings every time out.”

Wagner Perez led the way offensively for Lynn Classical, going 2-for-3 with an RBI and three stolen bases. Mark Walsh went 1-for-3 with an RBI double.

All nine starters recorded at least one hit.

“Our offense woke up a bit today,” Rogato said. “We faced a very good pitcher who throws hard. We worked counts and came up with some hits in key spots.”

Gloucester 10

Marblehead 3

It was a back-and-forth battle between two Northeastern Conference teams before Gloucester pulled away in the fifth inning off Marblehead mistakes, according to Magicians coach Mike Giardi.

Junior Grey Leventhal led Marblehead with three hits, while sophomore Will DePhillips hit his first home run of the season.

Swampscott 7

Stoneham 2

Swampscott’s Caden Ross (3 H, R, 5 K) entered in the second inning and went 4 2/3 innings to earn the win.

At the plate, Ross had a two-RBI single, while catcher Michael Collins added two hits and two RBIs, including a go-ahead RBI single to give Swampscott a 3-2 lead.

Swampscott scored four runs in the sixth, sparked by a two-out solo home run from Jamison Ford.

Lynn Tech 8

Greater Lawrence Tech 5

Lynn Tech went on the road and earned a win over Greater Lawrence Tech. The Tigers led 5-1 entering the fifth inning. Greater Lawrence Tech clawed back, but the Tigers held on.

Jendol Diaz and Albert Collado each tripled. In the top of the seventh, Richard Naugle drove in two runs for insurance.

Jaeran Quinona struck out seven on the mound for Lynn Tech. 

Winthrop 10

Saugus 5

Despite Brayden Crawford, Nathan Soroko and Garrett Peavey each going 2-for-3, the Sachems fell short at home.

Jordan Rodriguez took the loss, while Eli Fialho threw 5 1/3 innings in relief.

BOYS LACROSSE

St. John’s Prep 9

Boston College High 3

In a battle of two of the top teams in Division 1, the Eagles got the better of Boston College High. 

St. John’s Prep had balanced scoring with Beckett Lee leading the Eagles with three goals while Josh Barton and Ryan McCarth each had one  goal and one assist.

Will Crawford was 7-for-16 on face-offs. In net, Max Putney (4 saves) and Mattheus DuPlessis (9) shared the game combining for 13 saves. 

GIRLS TENNIS

Swampscott 5

Danvers 0

It was a clean sweep for Swampscott getting the better of Danvers. At first singles, Nikki Carr defeated Josie Vogel 6-6 (7-3), 6-1. At second singles, Ginger Gregoire won 6-2, 2-0 (medical forfeit), while Ana Eccles earned a 6-1, 6-2 win at third singles.

In doubles, Ava O’Donnell and Alexia O’Donnell won 6-1, 6-1 at first doubles. Eve Byrne and Lilly Carr did not drop a set in a 6-0, 6-0 win at second doubles.

Peabody 5

Winthrop 0

Alexandra Kourtelidis was consistent at first singles, winning 6-0, 6-0, according to Peabody coach John Sousa.

First doubles pair Anna Maciel and Artemis Greko also won 6-0, 6-0.

Tiffany Bettencourt won 6-0, 6-2 at second singles, while Yasnelly Fernandez won 6-0, 6-1 at third singles.

Manchester Essex 3

Lynnfield 2

Lynnfield fell to 7-2 after a narrow loss.

Vicky McCrann and Christine Choi won 6-4, 6-4 at first doubles, while Olivia Asaad and Emma Wagon earned a 6-2, 6-0 win at second doubles.

The match was decided at third singles, where Lynnfield’s Kathleen Brown fell 6-2, 4-6, 6-7 (5).

VOLLEYBALL

Greater Lawrence Tech 3

Lynn Tech 0

Lynn Tech fell to 4-8 with a straight-sets loss to Greater Lawrence Tech.

Despite the loss, Sam Caraballo had five digs and Amauri Bermudez added four kills.

Elmer Duran recorded eight assists and is one shy of 1,000 for his career.
