NAHANT — The Board of Selectmen voted unanimously to establish a Rights of Ways Committee, with the specific purpose of identifying and publishing publicly-owned rights of ways throughout the town.

The Committee is intended to work closely with Town Administrator Tony Barletta to establish the plan on how to best identify the rights of ways to the community, recover ones that have been encroached upon, and document the town’s legal possession of them. The three-person group will consist of a Planning Board-appointed member, an Open Space Committee-appointed member, and a member appointed by Barletta. Each appointed member will serve a three-year term.

“We have a number of rights of ways in Nahant, to some degree they’re certainly not all marked. Their locations are not… readily publicly available, and we’d like to do something about that,” Selectmen Chairman Josh Antrim said.

Antrim expressed his support for having a small group of individuals who have one particular goal. Selectmen Rob Tibbo and Gene Canty both expressed full agreement with Antrim’s comments.

“I also like the fact that it’s a small committee,” Antrim said. “Sometimes small committees are easier to get everyone together.”

The motion for the Committee’s formation includes that it will automatically dissolve after five years, unless the Selectmen elect to either dissolve it earlier or extend its existence.

The Selectmen also briefly revisited the idea of expanding their Board from three members to five. Canty, who originally proposed the change, lamented that there seemed to be no support presently to do so.
