In a non-league battle, the Pioneers (5-1-2) dropped their first game of the season Monday afternoon, losing to the visiting Chieftains at Pioneer Stadium 2-0. 

“It was a hard fought game but they were very good. We’re at the end of a long, hard stretch and Masco was just very good and was just too much for us today,” Pioneers’ boys soccer coach Brent Munroe said. “It was physical, but clean, I thought, but we had some chances. We didn’t move the ball very well and had a hard time getting and keeping possession. Masco was just the better team today.”

Munroe said junior Rocco Scenna and senior Tyler Maddocks played well. The Pioneers are back in action Tuesday at Pentucket at 7 p.m.

St. Mary’s 0

The Spartans couldn’t find the back of the net in a tightly contested match. St. Mary’s dropped to 3-2-1 on the season. 

St. Mary’s will look to rebound on Wednesday when it travels to Cardinal Spellman for a 3:30 p.m. showdown.

In a battle between two great teams, it was the Magicians coming out on top and defending their home turf. 

Both the Magicians and Spartans have solid defenses and it was always going to take a bit of magic to score. Luckily for Marblehead, freshman Lucy McDonald had the magic, scoring the game-winning goal for her first varsity goal of her career. The headed goal came from an assist from Ainsley McDonald off of a free kick. 

Lily Heller and Hailey Gilmore combined to record their third clean sheet of the season. 

Beverly 4

Bishop Fenwick 0

The Crusaders made the trip to Beverly, but returned empty-handed. The Panthers were up 1-0 at the end of the half, but piled on three more goals in the second half to close the game. 

Bishop Fenwick will look to bounce back on Wednesday when it travels to Archbishop Williams at 5 p.m.

Saugus 5

Malden 0

The Sachems’ offense was too powerful for the Golden Tornados on Monday. 

Saugus will look to keep the momentum going against Marblehead on Tuesday at 4 p.m. 

Peabody 4

Haverhill 0

The Tanners proved to be too much for Haverhill. The score was tied at halftime but after some second-half adjustments from head coach Jillian Tobin, Peabody started to find the holes in Haverhill’s defense. 

Kate Bresnahan opened the scoring off of an assist from Chris Troncoso in the third quarter. Daniella White netted a brace, while Amelia DiBattista also got in the scoring column thanks to an Elizabeth Moore assist. 

VOLLEYBALL

Lynn Classical 3

Chelsea 0

In Greater Boston League action, the Rams took care of business sweeping Chelsea at home. Winning in dominant fashion, Classical won by set scores: 25-17, 25-9, and 25-18. 

Senior outside hitter Amanda Hughes registered 14 kills and 10 digs. Junior, Emma Chevalier, did a little bit of everything finishing the night with 26 assists, four aces, two kills, and five digs. 

The Rams improve to 8-1 and will look to make it 9-1 come Wednesday when they host Somerville. 

“We played one of our better matches of the season tonight, we got contributions from everyone on the roster. Hopefully we can keep this momentum into our big match with Somerville Wednesday,” Rams coach Chris LeBlanc said.

Peabody 2

In a rivalry match, it was the Crusaders picking up the win in enemy territory. The Crusaders started off strong winning the first two sets 27-25, 25-23. 

The Tanners made adjustments after the second set and started to mount a comeback. Peabody won the next two sets 25-16, 25-21 to force a fifth and final set. 

Bishop Fenwick, despite losing the third and fourth set, prevailed and stopped the comeback beating Peabody 15-13 in the final set to go home with the win.

It was an overall team effort for the Eagles dispatching Malden Catholic at Mt. Hood golf course. 

Seamus O’Holleran (36), AJ Bodnar (35), and Jack Carew (34) all lowered their season averages to a 36.2. Tripp Hollister (38) moved his season average to a 36.7. 

St. John’s Prep are back in action on Tuesday against BC High at Ipswich Country Club.

The Spartans saw their winning streak snapped by the Shamrocks on Monday. Despite the loss, St. Mary’s got great games from two of it’s players. 

Micah Hashikawa (32 points) and Chase Collins (31) played well. 

St. Mary’s will look to start another win streak on Tuesday against Arlington Catholic.

The Tanners got the better of the Rams on Monday. All eight of Peabody’s players won their match: Nate Palhares, Joe Keka, Anthony Modugno, Andrew Pinto, Miguel Torres, Noah Crocker, Jayden Cunningham, and Jason Houlden.
