SWAMPSCOTT — District leaders welcomed the community to the new Swampscott Elementary School Sunday morning to officially celebrate the launch of the $100 million school.

The facility officially opened its doors on Aug. 28 when it welcomed more than 700 students after a nearly two-year construction process.

After opening remarks by Superintendent of Schools Pamela Angelakis, School Committee member and Chair of the School Building Committee Suzanne Wright spoke about how it was important for her and her peers to establish a great educational foundation for the town’s youngest generation.

“I need to start my thanks with the 15 other members of the School Building Committee. They committed more than five years. Dozens and dozens and then dozens more meetings,” Wright said.

She went on to individually recognize each member and describe their specific contributions, before introducing Principal Lori Sanborn. Sanborn recounted a moment that made her really appreciate the new facility.

“On Thursday, a Kindergarten student called me over to his stadium and said, ‘Ms. Sanborn, you glow,’” she said. “This statement caused me to pause and look around our astonishing cafeteria.”

State Rep. Jenny Armini attended the event, and was thanked on multiple occasions for her contributions that helped secure state funding to make the school a reality.

“I want to express my deep gratitude to everyone for pulling off this incredible learning space,” Armini said. “There is no more hopeful, joyful, powerful, exciting, impactful, inspiring, and dividend-producing investment government at any level can make than building a new school.”

Other individuals who shared their remarks included Town Administrator Sean Fitzgerald and Massachusetts School Building Authority Executive Director Mary Pichetti. Angelakis ended the ceremony with an optimistic look ahead to the future.
