ROUNDUP: Peabody soccer reigns supreme over Salem

What a day it was for the Peabody boys and girls soccer team, both taking care of business against Salem on Monday. 

The girls’ team was dominant in all phases of the game, beating the Witches 6-0.

Connie Patturelli led the way scoring a brace. Avery Marcu (goal), Ally Bettencourt (goal, assist),  Jess Steed (goal, assist), and Emma Wardle (goal) were the goal scorers in Salem. 

Gabby Gosselin recorded a pair of assists, while teammate Brooke Lomasney registered an assist in the win. 

On the boy’s side, they found themselves down 1-0 at halftime but regrouped and made adjustments and came out on top beating Salem 3-1. 

The Tanners were awarded a penalty kick which was converted by Kacper Kowalczyk to make it 1-1. 

Then it was Owen Brennan who put a mark on the game scoring twice to put the game to bed. 

Peabody will face Marblehead on Wednesday with the girl’s team visiting the Magicians and the boy’s team attempting to defend home turf. 

GIRLS SOCCER

Marblehead 3

Swampscott 0

The Magicians earned bragging rights over their traditional rivals Swampscott in a 3-0 shutout win. In the opening 14 minutes, Callie Gilmore unleashed a shot from 25 yards out that struck the crossbar. Swampscott thought they were out of danger until sophomore Lucy Church was first to react to the ball hitting the crossbar and headed it home over the Big Blue goalie for an early 1-0 lead. The goal was Church’s first for Marblehead. 

With under 10 minutes left in the first half, Marblehead got a second goal this time from Sadie Halpern. The speedster got past the Big Blue defense during a free kick and slotted the goal home to give Marblehead a 2-0 lead. 

Moments later, it was Callie Gilmore getting on the end of a corner piece routine to make it three first-half goals for Marblehead. 

Masco 7

Saugus 0

Against a really solid Sachems side, Masco prevailed and showed off its firepower. Leading the way for Masco was Amanda Schneider picked up multiple points in the win. Masco continues to show its Northeastern Conference dominance as it’s now back-to-back shutout victories against NEC teams.

FIELD HOCKEY

St. Mary’s 1

Weston 0

The game was looking like it was going to end as a draw until Camden Driscoll found the back of the goal for the game-winner with just 1:49 left in the game. Driscoll’s goal was assisted by Karina Martinez to give St. Mary’s its second win of the season. 

Giving the Spartans a chance to win the game was Tabby Lopes in goal. The goalie stood out keeping St. Mary’s in the game long enough for them to find the eventual winning goal. 

Lynnfield 2

Essex Tech 1

The Pioneers edged a narrow win to protect home field. Taylor Valiton did a little bit of everything as she scored and assisted. Valiton’s goal came from a pass from Libby Considine. 

Lynnfield’s other goal came from Gia Marotta. Lauren MacDonald made four saves in the win for Lynnfield.

Bishop Fenwick 6

Northeast 0

The Crusaders cruised past Northeast for the victory. Shea Mason couldn’t be stopped as she capped off an impressive performance with a hat trick. 

Bishop Fenwick’s next game is against Arlington Catholic on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. 

GOLF

St. Mary’s 161

Cardinal Spellman 70

St. Mary’s got off to a great start to the season with a quality win over Cardinal Spellman on Monday afternoon. 

Leading the way for St. Mary’s was Shea Newhall who scored a 33. Right behind him was Jared Burke (26), Micah Hashikawa (23), and Luke Dilisio (22). 

Stephen Nason (21), Chase Collins (20), and Ryan Amirualt (16) rounded out the top seven scores for the Spartans. 

St. John’s Prep 57

Gloucester 15

The Eagles (1-1) earned their first regular season win of the season with a comprehensive win over the Fishermen. 

Jack Moriarty led the team with a score of 35 (1-under par). This was Moriarty’s second-lowest score to date in his three varsity years. Moriarty ended up under par with a birdie on hole nine to wrap up his day in style. 

AJ Bodnar scored a 37, while teammates Tripp Hollister, Jack Carew, Dominic Meyers, and Cole Cullen all recorded a 38 in the win. 

VOLLEYBALL

Lowell Catholic 3

St. Mary’s 0

Despite it being the home opener for the Spartans, they couldn’t find the rhythm against Lowell Catholic. 

Although the Spartans lost in straight sets, each game was close 20-25, 17-25, and 22-25. 

Lynn Classical 3

Medford 0

The Rams improved to 4-0 on the season with a sweep of the Mustangs. It was a dominant performance by the Rams winning convincingly 25-9, 25-10, 25-17. 

Outside hitter Nevaeh Eth had a flawless performance, eight kills, one ace, and no errors. Senior Mia Pento recorded 15 digs and two assists. 

Junior setter Emma Chevalier provided 19 assists, six aces, and 11 digs in the win. 

The Rams look to remain undefeated on Wednesday when they travel to Everett for a 5:15 p.m. showdown. 

Lynnfield 3

Hamilton-Wenham 0

The Pioneers went into enemy territory and came out with a sweep of Hamilton-Wenham. 

Lynnfield took the first set 25-21. In the second set, the game was tied at 10 before Lynnfield closed the set with a 15-7 run to go up 2-0.

The Pioneers didn’t look back and capped off the impressive road victory.
