Lake View Avenue given a makeover

[ad_1]

LYNN — Flax Pond Park neighbors put on their green thumb this weekend and last, in an effort to beautify a large median on Lake View Avenue.

The initiative was led by the Flax Pond Association, which is a volunteer organization that hosts cleanups of the Flax Pond in the fall and spring, among other initiatives such as community gatherings and fundraisers.

Prior to the project, the area was overgrown with weeds, dead grass, and crunchy leaves. A couple of months ago, Vice President of the association Erica Baker asked what they could do to help, which led to the group banding together for the project.

“It was really quite the eye sore,” Ward 1 Councilor Dr. Peter Meaney said, who is a member of the association. “And we decided, we should get together and make this something of beauty.”

Last weekend, the association dug up the weeds, which was approximately 20 years of vegetation, Dr. Meaney said.

Ward 2 Councilor Obed Matul contributed the sign, which represents the work of the Flax Pond Association, Dr. Meaney said.

The beautified area currently holds a wastewater management pump.

“Hopefully it’s another area that we have beautified in the Flax Pond shorelines,” Leslie Cole, a member of the association said. “Now you want to drive down the street like, ‘Oh, that’s kind of nice,’ instead of looking at it like, ‘What are those green dead things there?’”

She said it was a neighborhood effort, between purchasing and planting the flowerings, and digging up the old vegetation.

Cole said Joy Campbell, a member of the association who is a botanist, helped design the new look for the area and guide the volunteers.

“It was something just kind of brought everybody together,” Dr. Meaney said.
