St. Mary’s Owumi scores offer from University of Miami

LYNN — Well, the list keeps getting longer for St. Mary’s girls basketball star Bella Owumi.

The incoming sophomore – one with a highly-decorated career that most upperclassmen would envy – received a full scholarship offer from the University of Miami this past weekend.

“After a great call with @CoachCullop (Tricia Cullop) and @FitzroyAnthony2 (Fitzroy Anthony), I am so blessed and thankful to receive a full scholarship offer to the University of Miami,” Owumi said in a statement on X, formerly known as Twitter. “Thank you to all of my teammates and coaches for always pushing me harder to reach my goals!”

After winning a state championship as an 8th grader in 2023, Owumi didn’t slow down during her freshman season. The do-it-all Spartan averaged 14.4 points, 10.2 rebounds, and 4.2 steals per game last winter. She also netted a career-high 34 points against Bay State powerhouse Bishop Feehan.

As a starter, the Catholic Central All-Star has more than 70 high school wins under her belt. On top of Miami, Owumi (6-foot guard) has received offers from Providence, Boston College, Harvard, UPenn, Stonehill, Rhode Island, and Northeastern, among others.

“She is tremendously talented and works on getting better every day, so none of this is really that surprising,” said St. Mary’s girls basketball coach and Athletic Director Jeff Newhall. “To get the offers she has gotten recently is a true sign that she isn’t just a great New England player, but one of the best in her class across the country.”

The Hurricanes are coming off a 19-12 season that included 14 wins on their home floor at the Watsco Center, which seats nearly 8,000 people.
