SAUGUS — The district’s new director of wellness and athletics, Matthew Serino, presented on the status of his department and his plans for the fall sports season at the School Committee’s meeting Thursday.
“I just want to thank everyone for the opportunity to be returning home. Working here is a dream come true, and I’m very excited,” Serino said.
Serino said that he had an opportunity to attend a training regarding new frameworks from the state for kindergarten through 12th grade.
“We are in the beginning stages of starting to work through that, how that’s going to look, and hopefully have that implemented by the end of this school year,” Serino said.
With respect to athletics, Serino said his first order of business is to acquaint himself with the coaches, especially for the fall season, and the athletes.
“They’re all super eager to get going and get started… Their ideals and their values seem to fit right alongside mine,” Serino said of the coaches.
Serino said the athletes he has met so far are a “fantastic group,” excited and invigorated to start the fall sports season.
More than 140 kids have signed up so far for fall sports, excluding middle schoolers.
Committee Vice Chair Tom Whittredge said he has “all the confidence in the world” that Serino will do a great job.
Committee member John Hatch said that the community is “blessed and excited” to have Serino, and Committee member Ryan Fisher described Serino’s enthusiasm as “infectious.”
Serino said there will be a fall sports night on Monday, Aug. 19, at which interested students and parents will have the opportunity to meet and get to know him.
