LYNN — The Parks and Recreation Department is gearing up for an action-packed summer, as it announced its annual Youth Summer Program on Wednesday.

Lisa Nerich, associate commissioner of the Department of Public Works, said that the city has had the program for more than 55 years.

“The City of Lynn offers quality programs to the youth of the city,” Nerich said. “These programs can help youth develop by providing emotional support, positive experiences, social skills, and opportunities to build positive relationships learning from role models and mentors.”

Just like in previous summers, kids will have the opportunity to learn a new sport or skill, or take part in various other activities out and about in the sun, including field trips.

“The annual Parks and Recreation Youth Summer Program, staffed by those participating in the Youth Summer Employment Program, has a legacy of accessible recreational fun in the sun for children across the city,” Mayor Jared Nicholson said. 

According to the program’s website, children ages 6 and older are welcome to participate in the program from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Thursday and on Fridays from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. from July 10 until Aug. 9.

Parents can sign their children up at any of the nine parks included in the program. Signing up is free and participation is free for most activities, with some requiring a small fee.

“On top of the countless activities, we are also cultivating a fondness for our local parks. These experiences shape not only our youth’s summers, but also promote spaces that energize them through creativity and meaningful engagement,” Nicholson said.

Each week, kids are invited to go on field trips, including to Sky Zone, Stone Zoo, and the Salem Willows. Each trip costs between $5 and $30 per kid to attend.
